Invitation to Participate: A Software Demo Event on Dance as 3D Sound
Are you interested in dance, sound and experimental art? If so, please consider joining me for an in-person software demonstration on transforming dance into 3D sound!
My name is Andrea Spaziani and I’ve been a professional dance artist and choreographer for the past 16 years. I’m looking for a group of approximately ten volunteers to listen to a series of dance movements over headphones and to describe what they hear. This feedback will assist me in developing software with support from the Canada Council for the Arts Digital Strategy Fund for projects that combine art and technology to positively impact public access to the arts.
My research question asks: how might 3D sound add to an audience’s experience of dance, and complement existing modes of access for sight impaired or blind audiences, such as audio description? Is there something about the feeling of the dancing body that could be transmitted through sound differently than through words?
Date: Sunday, November 7th OR Monday, November 8th, 2021 Time: For 1 hour between 10am until 4pm Location: Adelheid Dance Studio, 668 Brock Avenue, Unit B100, Toronto Ontario, M6H 3P2
Each participant will receive a $200 honorarium and a travel stipend for transportation from within the Toronto area. The demo will take place at the Adelheid dance studio. The address is 668 Brock Avenue, Unit B100, Toronto Ontario, M6H 3P2. Interested participants are requested to book a one-hour timeslot on either Sunday, November 7th or Monday, November 8th, 2021 between 10am and 4pm.
During that hour, you’ll be greeted and welcomed into the studio. After a short introduction about the project, you’ll be guided into a listening experience over headphones. We’ll then conduct a short interview which will be recorded over video and/or audio if you choose to give consent. Your expertise will be used to make adjustments to the software so that it may become an effective tool for other dancers, choreographers, sound designers, or artists to make their performance work more accessible to the sight impaired or blind community.
Regarding COVID 19 public health measures: we are required to follow recent guidelines as outlined by the government of Ontario. These include requiring proof of vaccination status prior to entering the studio, maintaining social distancing, reducing indoor capacity, cleaning and disinfecting, and wearing face coverings.
If you’d like to participate, you can schedule your timeslot in three different ways: by contacting Andrea by phone at 416 407 8785, or by email at email@example.com or by filling out this google form https://forms.gle/b8uRiVMi8XGaz7T6A . Please indicate your name and your preferred date and time of your appointment.
Thank you for your interest! I look forward to meeting and sharing with you.
Please note that the Adelheid studio is not fully barrier-free. It has not been equipped for wheelchair access. The studio is inside a residential building on the main floor, and there are no stairs nor an elevator to get to the entrance of the building. There are two large washrooms inside the studio. Guide dogs are welcome.
