Young Canada Works: Curatorial and Research Assistant

Hosted by The Blackwood Gallery

The Blackwood is a contemporary art gallery at the University of Toronto Mississauga campus dedicated to open, public research. The Blackwood presents curated exhibitions featuring the work of local, national, and international professional artists in on campus gallery spaces, as well as offsite projects throughout Mississauga and the GTA.

The Blackwood is currently seeking a Curatorial and Research Assistant. Working closely with the Assistant Curator and Project Coordinator, the Curatorial and Research Assistant will support the Blackwood’s hybrid programming from fall 2022 to spring 2023. The incumbent will support ongoing curatorial research, educational initiatives, and publishing projects for upcoming programming, responsive to changing conditions of gathering amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Forthcoming programs include outdoor exhibitions and interdisciplinary discursive programs, while ongoing publication series include The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (SDUK) broadsheets and upcoming books. The Curatorial and Research Assistant will provide support to the Blackwood through program, exhibition, and publishing research, gaining experience with the development of a range of programs and publications, while assisting with day-to-day execution of programs, including virtual projects. They will have the opportunity to work closely with gallery staff and arts professionals in contributing to this in-depth research, acquiring communication, collaboration, and project management skills in the process.

The Curatorial and Research Assistant will become acquainted with the complex challenges and opportunities present when working with a range of artists, writers, curators, researchers, and other academic and arts professionals. They will learn professional standards of working in an office setting, while contributing to a positive, constructive, and considerate workplace.

Please note: due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this is a hybrid position with remote and in-person activities in Mississauga. During remote shifts the incumbent will be expected to work from home with supervision and direction provided by digital means.

As part of the University of Toronto Mississauga, the Blackwood Gallery is strongly committed to diversity within its community and especially welcomes applications from people of colour, Indigenous people, people with disabilities, LGBTQ2S+ people, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas.

Young Canada Works can fully or partially reimburse costs for applicants who face barriers to employment. Please contact the gallery (below) to inquire about an accessibility reimbursement.
