Tangled's final show of 2022, avere cura, will be in the Tangled Art Gallery (401 Richmond St W S-124, Toronto) from December 9, 2022 - February 24, 2023.
Curated by Tangled's Curator in Residence Max Ferguson, avera cura features art by Susan Aydan Abbott, Olivia Brouwer, BI Garneau, Kit Trytten, seeley quest and Carla Sierra Suarez.
avere cura took root with the ideology of curation as care – the origins of the term “curating” being based in the Latin root “to take care.” The Western art world has been shaped across centuries by a predominantly white, heterosexist, and ableist art history (and continues to promote these dominant ideologies). To be outside the norm or the above-mentioned categories, whether BIPOC, Queer and Trans, mentally ill, neurodivergent, or disabled, creates friction. Disability art provides a social means for us to complicate these problematic tropes that are reified through the traditional white cube, gallery-based approach to displaying and making work. In avere cura, practices of access trouble the structure of the gallery and its ideals: together we make room for new ways of seeing and being, as well as making.
