Broken Chord
For Broken Chord, internationally acclaimed dancer, choreographer, and director has joined forces with composer and music director Thuthuka Sibisi to weave together recorded and personal accounts of The African (Native) Choir that toured the world in the 1890s. This peeformance, running from March 9-11, looks at the Black body as a political site, the work questions the relationship between the colonized and the colonizer, and either’s complicity in shaping and shifting a South African narrative – past and present. Presented by TO Live at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts in Toronto, Broken Chord not only reflects on an archive but looks to trigger, critique, and comment on urgent issues of migration, dispossession, borders, and paths of forced closure – a deliberate and disturbing gesture on the part of the west against the other. Interlacing the past with the present, Maqoma employs traditional Xhosa and contemporary dance to thread personal stories of the choir, while reflecting on the spiritual and political complications of colonialism.
