He/Him

Image 1: A photo of Steven on an outdoor volleyball court in bright sunlight. He is wearing a light gray t-shirt, black paints, and black shoes with metal studs. He is playing a white folding chair like a musical instrument; he is swinging it about with his mouth open. He is surrounded by people laughing.

Image 2: A headshot of a tall, thin white man with dark hair and brown eyes. He is wearing a black porkpie hat, a lavender shirt, and a purple jacket adorned with badges and pins. He is smiling.

Image 3: A photo of a collage on rectangular canvas entitled, "2020 in Retrospect". The art is composed of trail maps and park brochures, cut up and glued together, from the states of Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, and North Carolina.

Image 4: An image of a paragraph of text from the article "Being Sane in Insane Places" by D. L. Rosenhan with some of the words crossed out in thick black marker. The words "insanity is normal" are the only words not crossed out.

Steven T. Licardi is an Autistic social worker, spoken word poet, and performance activist working at the intersections of art and social policy. He travels domestically and internationally using the power of spoken word to create empathic dialogue around, to confront the realities of, and to assist communities in dismantling the stigma surrounding mental health and mental illness. Since 2016, his ever-evolving performance-lecture series #CoupDeMot has been confronting how mental illnesses manifest out of oppressive social systems, with versions appearing in Vigo, Spain in 2016, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in 2018, and in Thessoliniki, Greece in 2019. His most recent collection of poems, ‘a billion burning dreams’ (STL, 2018) traces his own mental health journey.
